Why I Teach - Karen Voskanian
/Growing up part of an immigrant family, Karen values community and loves how yoga brings people together.
“I love bringing a sense of community to all my classes; I get to know my students, their families and kids,” she says. “I think we all need and benefit from being part of a something bigger than ourselves, and I love watching my students grow into themselves and their practice.”
Karen appreciates when teachers bring themselves to class, and finds herself gravitating towards teachers who are genuine.
“I’m loud, I laugh a lot. I’m not going to pretend I’m someone I’m not, and I think it’s important for teachers be authentic in their classes."
She also finds herself learning as much from her students as they are learning from her.
“I don’t connect with the guru mentality; we’re all students who are constantly learning. I love seeing my students move and do something interesting with their bodies and am always finding new things to add to my practice and teaching.”
In our "Off the Mat" series, we discuss the ways yoga has transformed SoulPlay's teachers outside of their practice. In this article, learn why Karen thinks of yoga as as public service.
